The Essence of the RTI Act

The Right to Information Act, 2005, empowers Indian citizens to access information from public authorities, fostering transparency and accountability in governance. A structured two-tier appeal system escalates requests to appellate authorities and, ultimately, to the Central or State Information Commissions, which hold quasi-judicial powers and can impose penalties for non-compliance.

However, activists continue pushing for broader inclusion—such as bringing private service providers under its ambit—and safeguarding whistle‑blower identities.
